There isn't a single temperature-to-rug rule that suits every horse. Use the forecast as one part of the decision, alongside your horse's coat, condition, shelter and response.
Look beyond the overnight low
The BHS rugging guidance highlights wind and prolonged rain, clipping, body condition and individual tolerance. It also advises checking comfort beneath the rug behind the withers: warm and dry is the aim, rather than sweaty or damp.
Plan the next check
Write down who will check the horse and when, especially if a cold morning is followed by a warmer afternoon. Don't let a calculator result replace that check. Remove the rug daily to look for rubbing or soreness, following the manufacturer's fitting instructions.
We haven't turned the forecast into an automatic gram recommendation. Read the BHS guidance in full and discuss individual concerns with your vet.
